Paul Merson believes Manchester United are unlikely to make any signings in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils ended a four-game winless run on New Year’s Day thanks to Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

Manchester United are 12 points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City ahead of the Citizens’ home clash against Watford at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Jose Mourinho signed three players in the summer transfer window after the Red Devils recruited Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The Manchester United boss got his business done early in 2016 summer transfer window, too, after the Red Devils snapped up Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.

Mourinho hasn’t made a January signing since taking over the 20-time English champions.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson appeared to suggest that Manchester United won’t make any additions this month.

“Jose Mourinho said after the Burnley game that Man Utd had not spent as much as Man City, but he tends to get his business done very early in the summer. As soon as the season finishes, he’s in there – bang, smash, wallop, gets his players and then goes on holiday before working on his team,” Merson told Sky Sports.

Manchester United won the League Cup and the Europa League in Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the table but secured a place in the Champions League thanks to their Europa League triumph.
