The Red Devils are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks after the mid-season window opened on Monday.
Jose Mourinho will likely be keen to bolster his squad at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils currently way off the pace in the race for the Premier League title with Manchester City.
Manchester United were relatively busy last summer as they brought in Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.
However, former Manchester United star Scholes feels that the Red Devils are in need of a controlling midfield player in the January transfer window.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday night, Scholes said: “Paul Pogba is not a player who all of a sudden makes a team tick like a Luka Modric or a Toni Kroos.
“Pogba is being asked to do that job and that’s not his best role for me.”
Manchester United are currently preparing for their home FA Cup third round clash against Derby County on Friday night.
The Red Devils look more than on course to better their sixth placed finish in the Premier League last season in what is Mourinho’s second season in charge at the club.
But it remains to be seen whether Manchester United will spend big this month or wait until the summer transfer window.
