Steven Gerrard has taken to social media to give his stamp of approval to the signing of Virgil van Dijk after the defender’s brilliant Liverpool FC debut against Everton on Friday night.

The Netherlands international signed for the Reds from Southampton last week after having been relentlessly linked with a move to Anfield over the last few months.

Van Dijk made his first appearance for the Reds as he lined up in central defence alongside Joel Matip at Anfield in the FA Cup third-round clash on Friday night.

The tie looked to be heading towards a replay after James Milner’s first-half penalty was cancelled out by Gylfi Siggurdsson’s brilliant goal in the second half.

But it was Van Dijk’s night as he headed home in the 84th minute to wrap up the victory for the Reds and cap a brilliant debut for the Netherlands international.

And former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard clearly approved of what he was seeing as he took to social media and posted a picture of Van Dijk celebrating his goal.

Gerrard shared the picture on Instagram and wrote: “VVD 🎯 👏🏻 @virgilvandijk.”

Liverpool FC are next in action when they take on leaders Manchester City in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday next week.
