Charlie Nicholas has rubbished the suggestion that Tottenham Hotspur could fall foul of the Wembley factor when AFC Wimbledon visit in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Spurs will host the League One side in England’s prestigious cup competition on Sunday fresh from a 1-1 draw with West Ham United at the home of English football mid-week.

Tottenham have only managed to win six of their 11 games in the Premier League this season, dropping 11 points in their home fixtures to undermine their top-four challenge.

Mauricio Pochettino will be desperate to win some silverware to cap his progress at the north London club with nothing to show so far but second-place and third-place finishes.

Spurs managed to get to the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley last season before a 4-2 loss to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the last four.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas doesn’t expect Spurs to have any problems dismissing the challenge of another London side in the third round on Sunday afternoon.

“One of Tottenham’s biggest problems this season is opposition sides raising their levels for the trip to Wembley but, while it will be a great away day for the fans, it is one hell of a bridge to gap for a side sitting just outside the Sky Bet League One relegation places,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Mauricio Pochettino will make changes but has options to do so with several players coming back from injuries and they’ve certainly had their critics for the way they crashed out of the Carabao Cup, so I can’t see anything other than an emphatic home win here.”

Tottenham finished in second place in the Premier League table last season after finishing seven points adrift of eventual champions Chelsea in the title race.

Spurs are in fifth spot in the current top-flight standings and three points behind Liverpool FC.
