Michael Owen states his prediction for Tottenham v AFC Wimbledon
The Liverpool legend is backing Tottenham Hotspur to reach the fourth round thanks to a comfortable win over AFC Wimbledon
Michael Owen is backing Tottenham Hotspur to beat AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup third round at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Spurs will welcome their London neighbours in the domestic cup competition as AFC Wimbledon get the chance to play at the home of English football.
Tottenham have a poor record against teams from the English capital in the Premier League at Wembley this season.
Indeed, Spurs lost 2-1 to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in their opening fixture at Wembley in the 2017-18 season.
Tottenham played out a 1-1 draw with West Ham United in their last home Premier League game before the FA Cup third round.
Former Liverpool striker Owen is confident that Tottenham will make it past Wimbledon and book their place in the fourth-round draw.
“Spurs have failed to reach the 4th Round just once in the last 11 seasons and it is hard to see the Dons bucking that trend in the club’s second ever competitive visit to Wembley,” Owen told BetVictor.
“AFC Wimbledon beat Plymouth 2-0 in the 2016 League Two Play-Off Final on that occasion, but they are likely to come up short against a Spurs side who should have too much class for Sunday’s visitors.”
Spurs managed to get to the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley last season before a 4-2 loss to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the last four.
Tottenham will take on Serie A giants Juventus in the Champions League last 16 next month.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in fifth place in the Premier League table and three points behind Liverpool.
Spurs sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City in a £52m deal in the summer transfer window.
