The Red Devils head into their trip to north London fresh from having secured their place in the FA Cup fifth round thanks to a 4-0 thrashing of Yeovil Town on Friday night.
Alexis Sanchez could be in line to make his Premier League debut for the Red Devils when they take on Spurs this week following his move to Old Trafford from Arsenal earlier in the month.
However, former Arsenal star Merson believes that Spurs are poised to put further pressure on Manchester United in the title race by claiming a narrow victory on Wednesday night.
Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports: “I watched United at Burnley and they were very efficient.
“They weren’t really playing free-flowing attacking football and they struggled to break Burnley down. This will be a difficult game for them because I just can’t see how they will outscore Spurs.
“Jose Mourinho will go to Wembley and set his side up not to get beat. With Alexis Sanchez on board that little bit of extra quality gives them a big chance but if Tottenham can get their full strength side out they’ll be very difficult to stop.”
Manchester United head into this week’s round of fixtures in second place in the Premier League table and 12 points behind leaders Manchester City.
It seems as if the Red Devils will not be able to catch the Citizens in the race for the title this time around but Jose Mourinho will be keen for his side to finish as highly as possible after their disappointing sixth-placed finish last season.
