Steven Gerrard reacts to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s display in Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Everton
Steven Gerrard was impressed with what he saw from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Arsenal against Everton
Steven Gerrard praised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a “world class” finish after the new signing scored his first goal for Arsenal in Saturday’s 5-1 thrashing of Everton on Saturday.
The Gabon international signed for the Gunners from Borussia Dortmund last week and was put straight into the starting line-up for the clash against the Toffees.
Aaron Ramsey set the Gunners on their way with a good finish in the sixth minute, before Laurent Koscielny doubled the home side’s lead shortly after.
Ramsey then added a second in the 19th minute, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan linked up with his former team-mate Aubameyang, who dinked a brilliant finish over Jordan Pickford to make it 4-0 at half-time, despite him appearing to be offside.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled a goal back for the visitors after the break but Ramsey completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute to complete the rout.
Aubameyang looked sharp on his Arsenal debut and former Liverpool FC star Gerrard was impressed by the striker’s finish against the Toffees.
Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Gerrard said: “It was offside, it was clearly offside. The officials got it wrong.
“But Arsenal caused Everton all sorts of problems. This is a lovely little pass [from Mkhitaryan] and the finish [from Aubameyang], it reminds of the Hernan Crespo finish in the Champions League final in 2005.
“It’s absolutely world class.”
And Aubameyang himself seemed to be pretty happy with his Arsenal debut.
“I am really happy [to score]. We won the game in the first-half, the second was a bit different,” Aubameyang told BT Sport.
Arsenal will now switch their attentions towards their Premier League showdown with top four and local rivals Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday afternoon next week.
