Paul Merson believes Arsenal and Chelsea FC will miss out on a place in the Premier League’s top four.

The Gunners missed out on a chance to gain some ground on their top-four rivals on Tuesday night after Arsenal lost 3-1 to Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

The north London side broke the deadlock in South Wales through Nacho Monreal before a series of defensive lapses helped the Swans to come from behind and secure three points.

Chelsea FC slumped to a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night as the Blues continued their unconvincing start to 2018.

The Blues dropped to fourth place in the Premier League table and two points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur after Spurs were 2-0 winners against Manchester United at Wembley.

Arsenal are eight points adrift of Chelsea FC to leave Arsene Wenger’s side with a difficult route back into the Champions League qualification places.

Former England international Merson believes Arsenal and Chelsea FC will end the 2017-18 season outside the top-four places.

“It’s tough but I’m going to go with Arsenal and Chelsea missing out,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“For me, Tottenham can give anyone, including Man City a game, on their day and results like the one they picked up against Manchester United will only build confidence.

“Lucas Moura is also an excellent signing from PSG and he will make them even stronger as we get to the business part of the season.”

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season after Liverpool beat their rivals to the final Champions League spot.

Chelsea FC won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season.
