Paul Merson is not expecting to see Arsenal FC finish in the top four this season despite their flurry of transfer activity in the January window.

The north London side were one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League last month as they opted to ship out the likes of Theo Walcott, Francis Coquelin, Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy.

The Gunners moved quickly to bolster their attacking ranks after bringing in both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the mid-season transfer window.

However, former Arsenal FC star Merson still feels that the Gunners have failed to address their main weaknesses at the back and is still tipping the north Londoners to finish outside of the top four this season.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “I don’t think these signings buy you a top-four finish.

“They leave you with more questions to answer. Look what happened with Mesut Ozil as well.

“They’ve just given him £350,000 a week after telling Alexis Sanchez he couldn’t have it. He’s going to be 30 this year.

“Spending that kind of money on a 30-year-old is unheard of at Arsenal and there is no way that was Wenger’s idea.”

Arsenal FC missed out on a top-four finish last term as they had to settle for a fifth-placed finish.

That meant that they missed out on Champions League qualification as they had to settle for a place in the Europa League this season.

The Gunners return to Premier League action next weekend with a crunch clash against bitter local rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.
