Arsenal legend explains why he’d prefer Arsene Wenger over Jurgen Klopp
The Arsenal legend insists he would still rather Arsene Wenger in charge over Jurgen Klopp
Charlie Nicholas has insisted that he would still take Arsene Wenger over Jurgen Klopp despite the Arsenal manager’s recent struggles.
The Gunners boss has faced relentless criticism over the past two or three seasons following Arsenal’s lack of success in the Premier League and the Champions League.
Wenger has led the Gunners to three FA Cup titles in the past four seasons to appease some Arsenal supporters but the north London side have regressed in the Premier League.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time under Wenger.
Arsenal signed Alexandre Lacazette in a then club-record £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon last summer but the Frenchman hasn’t been able to stop the club’s slump.
Indeed, the Gunners are in sixth place in the English top flight and eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea FC to leave Champions League qualification unlikely.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are in third place and nine points ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table.
Asked whether he would prefer Wenger or Klopp in charge of his former club Arsenal, Nicholas told Sky Sports:
“I’m sticking with Wenger ahead of Klopp because of what he’s done for the club.
“He’s overstayed his greatness because he’s now got a team which is average and that is his responsibility. Defensively he’s weak but I love his style of play.
“His failure to get quality defenders has been the downfall, but that’s not necessarily only his problem because his scouts are clearly letting him down.”
Arsenal will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
