Paul Merson: What I really think about Arsenal star Granit Xhaka
The Arsenal legend expresses his concerns about Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka
Paul Merson has admitted that he still has doubts about Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.
The Switzerland international moved to the Gunners in a £33m deal from Bundesliga giants Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Xhaka arrived at the north London club with a promising reputation having captained Monchengladbach at the age of 21.
However, the holding midfielder has struggled to recreate his impressive Bundesliga performances to the Premier League.
Xhaka has lacked discipline in a defensive midfield role to often leave the Gunners defence exposed over the past 18 months.
Arsenal have already conceded 36 times in 27 games in the Premier League this term to raise questions about Arsene Wenger’s defence.
Former Gunners star Merson opened up about his doubts surrounding Xhaka.
“They’ve tried with Xhaka for big money,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports. “I look at Xhaka the other week.
“He scored the winning gaol against Chelsea the other week. Everyone was going mad. My first thought was what are you doing in the box. He is a defensive midfielder.”
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC in the race to secure a spot in the Champions League.
The Gunners will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley later this month.
The north London side signed Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window.
Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons.
