Wayne Rooney backs new Arsenal signing to go to next level at The Emirates
Henrikh Mkhitaryan will kick on at Arsenal following his January move from Manchester United, according to Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney is backing Arsenal signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan to go to the next level at the north London club.
The Gunners signed the Armenia international in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez complete a switch to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
Mkhitaryan struggled to leave his mark on the Manchester United during a difficult 18 months under Jose Mourinho following a £30m move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund.
The 28-year-old playmaker has been handed the number seven shirt following his switch to the eight-time English champions.
Mkhitaryan made three assists in his first start for the Gunners as Arsenal eased to a resounding 5-1 win over Everton at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
Rooney was Mkhitaryan’s team-mate for 12 months at Old Trafford before the ex-England captain returned to his boyhood club Everton last summer.
Speaking to Monday Night Football at Sky Sports about Mkhitaryan’s move to Arsenal last month, Rooney said:
“At Arsenal I think he will have players around him running off the ball, taking the ball, and he will create goals and he will score goals.
“So I really do think he will kick on.”
Mkhitaryan has linked up with his former Borussia Dortmund team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at The Emirates after Arsenal spent a club record £56m fee on the Gabon international.
The Armenia international won the League Cup and the Europa League at Old Trafford last term.
