Martin Keown uses Man United to make point about Arsenal
The Arsenal legend believes the Gunners need to win the Europa League and the League Cup to rescue their season
Martin Keown has urged Arsenal to emulate Manchester United and win the Europa League to rescue an otherwise disappointing season.
The Gunners were 3-0 winners against Ostasunds in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 clash in Sweden on Thursday night.
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea FC in the race to secure a Champions League spot.
There are remarkable parallels between Arsenal’s current campaign and Jose Mourinho’s first season at Manchester United last term.
The 20-time English champions beat Southampton in the League Cup final back in February 2017 before Manchester United were 2-0 winners against Dutch giants Ajax in the Europa League final.
The Red Devils’ triumph secured a place in the 2017-18 Champions League campaign to rescue their season following a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League table.
Former Gunners defender Keown believes Arsenal need to win the League Cup and the Europa League to put a positive spin on an otherwise disappointing season.
“Arsenal’s season is now the Europa League and the League Cup,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“They can still win two trophies and maybe the Europa League will rescue them as it did Manchester United last season.
“Only once these competitions are out of the way at the end of the season can Arsenal start to look at what they do going forwards.”
Arsenal will take on runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley later this month.
The Gunners signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window.
