Henrikh Mkhitrayan uses Jurgen Klopp to make point about Arsenal
The Arsenal playmaker likens the Gunners' style of play to Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp
Henrikh Mkhitaryan believes Arsenal’s style of play suits the January signing given his success at Borussia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp.
The Armenia international established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s best players under the German coach during a three-season spell at Dortmund.
Indeed, he moved to Manchester United from Dortmund in a £30m deal in 2016 after Mkhitaryan was voted the Bundesliga players’ player of the year.
Mkhitaryan struggled to shine in the Red Devils team given Mourinho’s conservative tactics at Old Trafford to prompt transfer speculation surrounding the 29-year-old.
Arsenal completed a deal to sign Mkhitaryan in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
Mkhitaryan made three assists in his home debut in a sparkling performance to help Arsenal ease to a 5-1 win against Everton at The Emirates earlier this month.
The January signing likened Arsenal’s style of player to Klopp swashbuckling Dortmund team.
“In the last year I played in Dortmund with [Jurgen] Klopp, Dortmund was playing very good football and I think it seems to be a bit similar comparing Arsenal to Dortmund,” Mkhitaryan told ESPN.
“I’m very happy to be here. I get pleasure playing offensive football and being part of Arsenal. Every offensive player wants to play offensive football. For me as well, I always love to play offensive football, it’s not easy to defend all the time.
“It’s necessary to do the best for the team, but in this case, when Arsenal are playing offensive football, I’m trying to give everything I can give to the team.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons following a 2-1 win against Chelsea at Wembley last term.
The Gunners will take on Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday but Mkhitaryan will be cup tied for the clash.
