Arsenal signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan rubbishes claim he can’t play with Mesut Ozil
The Arsenal signing insists he can strike up a promising partnership with German midfielder Mesut Ozil
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has rubbished the suggested that he can’t play in the same Arsenal team with Mesut Ozil.
The Armenia international completed a move to Arsenal in a swap deal in the January transfer window that saw Manchester United bring in Alexis Sanchez.
Mkhitaryan made three assists in an impressive performance on his home debut in a 5-1 win over Everton at The Emirates at the start of the month.
The former Borussia Dortmund playmaker has linked with with fellow January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and World Cup winner Ozil at the north London side.
Mkhitaryan shares similarities with the Germany international given both playmakers are accustomed to pulling the strings behind the striker.
Some of Arsenal’s critics have suggested Mkhitaryan and Ozil can’t play in the same team.
But the Arsenal number 11 rubbished the claim that he is too similar to the former Real Madrid playmaker.
“Some people are saying we cannot play together, but I can’t understand these people that are saying that,” Mkhitaryan told ESPN. “I’m just enjoying playing with Mesut and he’s an amazing football player.
“I’m getting better playing with him, everyone knows his skills, abilities, so why not? Everything is possible, why not have two No. 10s on a pitch?
“You know, even if we [Arsenal] play very good, there’s always room for improvement — even if we were playing offensive football, we can still improve. I mean maybe we can improve in every aspect, it doesn’t matter if we are strong in one side and weak in the other — I think there are a lot of spaces for improvement.”
Arsenal will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
The January signing was part of the Manchester United team that won the League Cup last term thanks to a 3-2 victory over Southampton.
Jose Mourinho spent £30m on Mkhitaryan before Manchester United sold the Armenian star 18 months later.
