Ian Wright explains how new Arsenal signing will be judged at The Emirates
The Arsenal legend explains how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be evaluated at The Emirates
Ian Wright believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be judged on how many goals the new Arsenal signing scores rather than his overall involvement in games.
The Gabon international completed a move to Arsenal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund in a club record £56m deal on transfer deadline day.
Aubameyang was handed the number seven shirt following his record move after African forward was recruited to replace Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates Stadium.
The 28-year-old scored Arsenal’s fourth goal in a 5-1 win over Everton in north London on Saturday evening to open his account on his debut.
The African forward netted 141 goals in 213 games in all competitions during five and a half seasons at the Westfalenstadion.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Aubameyang shouldn’t be judged on how many touches he amasses in a game but rather on the goals that the January signing scores.
“It’s been mentioned about Aubameyang not having enough touches in matches,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 live. “He can get away with that.
“If he stays right at the top there and let him get on with it, then why do you want touches when you’ve got Ozil, Mkhitaryan and all those players?
“You can stay on the edge and not touch it. If Arsenal can play to his strengths, he’s that kind of player who could have four touches and score four goals.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a spot in the Champions League for the current campaign.
The Gunners are five points behind Chelsea FC in fourth spot with 12 games remaining in the 2017-18 campaign.
Arsenal will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley later this month.
