Martin Keown uses Man United to make point about Arsenal
Martin Keown says that Arsenal's only hope of reaching the Champions League is by winning the Europa League
Martin Keown believes that Arsenal’s only hope of securing Champions League qualification will be by winning the Europa League this season.
The north London side suffered a damaging blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four in the Premier League this season when they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham on Saturday’s north London derby clash at Wembley.
Arsenal are now well off the pace in the race for a top four finish and it seems as if they will struggle to break back into the top four this term after having finished fifth last term.
And former Gunners defender Keown reckons that the north London side are very unlikely to be able to finish in the top four this season.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday, Keown said: “The Europa League is the only way Arsenal are now going to achieve anything this season.
“It’s going to be a long season and they’re going to have to do it the same way Manchester United did to try and get into the Champions League.
“That’s the route they’re going to have to take and Wenger has got to find his best 11 and best shape.”
Arsenal will continue their quest for Europa League glory when they take on Ostersund in the first leg of their last 32 clash on Thursday night.
The Gunners have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
Arsenal have, however, won the FA Cup in three of the last four years and will take on Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley later this month.
