Paul Merson blasts Arsenal for not making this January signing
Paul Merson believes that Arsenal should have signed a new defender in the January transfer window
Paul Merson has criticised Arsenal for failing to sign Jonny Evans from West Brom in the January transfer window.
The north London side were heavily linked with a move to sign the 30-year-old defender in the mid-season window but a move failed to materialise.
Instead, Arsenal opted to bolster their attacking options with the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Mkhitaryan moved to The Emirates as part of the same deal which saw Alexis Sanchez head to Manchester United, while Arsenal also offloaded the likes of Theo Walcott, Francis Coquelin and Mathieu Debuchy.
However, former Arsenal star Merson has been left dismayed by the fact that the Gunners have not made a move to bolster their defensive options.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “They still can’t defend!
“How can you pay all that money for Aubameyang and fail to get Jonny Evans from West Brom? I find that amazing.
“Defending has been Arsenal’s Achilles heel for years but what did they do to correct it in this window? Absolutely nothing. Good luck with that.”
Arsenal return to Premier League action next weekend with a crunch clash against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at Wembley.
The Gunners will be looking to beat their north London rivals for the second time this season after they got the better of Mauricio Pochettino’s men when they last met at The Emirates last year.
Arsenal are aiming to try and break back into the top four this season after they finished fifth last term.
