Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang makes admission about Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Arsenal
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opens up about his decision to sign for Arsenal last month along with Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has admitted that Henrikh Mkhitaryan was a “big factor” in his decision to sign for Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The Gabon international signed for the north London side on transfer deadline day last week, just days after Mkhitaryan completed his move from Manchester United as part of the deal which saw Alexis Sanchez head in the other direction.
The pair know each other well, after having linked up together for a number of seasons at Borussia Dortmund.
The two former Dortmund stars combined well as Mkhitaryan set up Aubameyang for his first Arsenal goal in the 5-1 thrashing of Everton at The Emirates last weekend.
And Aubameyang has now revealed that the chance to link up with Mkhitaryan once again played a big part in his decision to sign for the north London side last month.
Speaking on the Arsenal Weekly Podcast, Aubameyang said: “It’s like [being reunited with] a brother, a good friend. We played together in the past and I’m really happy to see him again.
“He called me a few times, he asked, ‘Will you come or not?’ I said, ‘First you have to tell me if you sign or not’.
“He told me all was done and of course it was a big factor in coming here.
“We understand each other on and off the pitch, that’s why it’s easier on the pitch
“[The fans] have to be happy [to see us together], we will do our best of course, like we did in the past.”
Both Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners take on Tottenham Hotspur in their crunch north London derby clash at Wembley on Saturday lunchtime.
The north London side are currently in sixth place in the table but know that a win would move them to just one point behind Spurs in the table.
