Arsene Wenger compares Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal legend
Arsene Wenger discusses comparisons between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Thierry Henry at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has admitted that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang does have many similar qualities to former Arsenal star Thierry Henry.
The Gabon striker has been settling into life at Arsenal after having signed for the Gunners at the end of the January transfer window.
Aubameyang opened his Arsenal goal-scoring account in style last weekend when he scored his first goal for the Gunners in the 5-1 thrashing of Everton at The Emirates.
Arsenal fans will be hoping to see the 28-year-old establish himself as a key player at The Emirates in the coming seasons as he looks to try and help fire the Gunners to some major trophies.
Wenger was asked about a comparison to Gunners legend Henry during a news conference at London Colney last week, and he replied: “It is an ambitious statement but it is a good one.
“Henry is the best goalscorer ever in Arsenal’s history, so it doesn’t mean he will score as many goals. But why not?
“He is Thierry Henry with his quality of runs. But it’s a bit too early to compare him to the best player ever who played here.
“He has played one game. But it’s a good example to follow. His finish was brilliant. His finishing is good.
“You don’t score by coincidence for so many years, if you score many goals.”
Arsenal will take on Ostersund in the first leg of their Europa League last 32 clash on Thursday night as they bid to make it through to the next round.
With the Gunners currently outside of the top four, their best hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League may be to win the Europa League this season.
Arsenal ended up in fifth place and had to settle for Europa League football this term.
