Rio Ferdinand sends message to Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal
Rio Ferdinand discusses Alexandre Lacazette's recent disappointing form for Arsenal
Rio Ferdinand believes that Alexandre Lacazette is struggling for confidence at Arsenal after the Gunners’ signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.
The Gunners paid a club-record transfer fee to sign Lacazette from Lyon last summer but the France international has struggled to produce consistent form for the north London side.
The competition for a starting spot in the Arsenal team increased significantly in January after the Gunners opted to sign Aubameyang from Dortmund.
Indeed, Lacazette has started both of Arsenal’s two games since the Gabon striker’s arrival on the bench and he was unable to affect the game when he came on against Tottenham on Saturday.
And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand reckons that the French striker is struggling for confidence at The Emirates at the moment.
Asked whether Lacazette is struggling mentally following the arrival of Aubemeyang or whether he is just short of confidence, Ferdinand told BT Sport on Saturday: “I think it’s both.
“That’s the risk you take when you sign two big players in the summer and then in January. It’s up to Lacazette to say ‘I’m here to fight – I don’t care who has come in’.
“He scored goals in France – he is a good finisher but when your confidence comes away you’re not the same player.”
Arsenal will look to get back to winning ways on Thursday night when they take on Ostersund in the first leg of their Europa League last 32 tie.
The Gunners look set to finish outside the top four this season so winning the Europa League could be their only hope of Champions League qualification.
