Jamie Redknapp urges Arsene Wenger to make this Arsenal signing in summer
The Liverpool FC legend wants Arsenal to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window
Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger still needs to sign a defensive midfielder to improve the Gunners team.
The north London side managed to put a positive spin on the January transfer window after a number of significant incomings and outgoings last month.
Arsenal recruited Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez complete a switch to Manchester United.
The Gunners spent a club record £56m fee on Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on transfer deadline day.
The north London side made the decision to sell Theo Walcott and Francis Coquelin before a dramatic Wednesday last week that saw Olivier Giroud complete a £21m move to rivals Chelsea.
However, Wenger failed to bring in any proven defenders or holding midfielders despite the addition of 20-year-old Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Switzerland international Granit Xhaka has been regularly criticised for his ill disciplined performances in a holding role in the Arsenal team in the current campaign.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp has encouraged Wenger to sign a defensive midfielder in the next transfer window to tackle an area of weakness in his squad.
“Arsenal still need a defensive midfielder who can perform the role Fernandinho fulfils at Manchester City,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“Their back four still does not look capable of consistently keeping clean sheets.”
Arsenal will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley next month.
