Insider claims Arsenal could have signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £11m in 2013
Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein says Arsenal missed out on the chance to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in an £11m deal in 2013
Arsenal could have signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in an £11m deal in 2011, according to Raphael Honigstein.
The Gabon international completed a club record move to Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old striker scored 141 times in 213 games in all competitions during his four and a half seasons at Westfalenstadion.
Former Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp was responsible for signing African striker Aubameyang from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in 2013.
However, Bundesliga expert Honigstein expressed his surprise that Arsene Wenger didn’t look to sign Aubameyang before he moved to Germany.
“When he was signed for Dortmund from Saint-Etienne, he was the second best striker in France,” Honigstein told Irish podcast Second Captains.
“I was surprised Arsene Wenger wasn’t interested and instead bought Olivier Giroud. He was available for £12m.
“I am surprised he didn’t go for him earlier.”
The Gunners signing scored on his Arsenal debut in a 5-1 win over Everton at The Emirates on Saturday evening.
Aubameyang has been prolific during his brilliant spell at Dortmund following 69 goals in 79 games in the Bundesliga.
The Gabon international has won the German Cup and two German Super Cups during his four and a half seasons at Dortmund.
Arsenal signed France international Alexandre Lacazette in a club record £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon last summer.
