Reporter: Arsenal could move to sign quality 25-year-old this summer
James Olley delivers an update on Arsenal's reported pursuit of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak
Arsenal could make a move to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the summer transfer window, according to reporter James Olley.
The north London side have just enjoyed a very busy transfer window after bringing in both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Gunners also offloaded a lot of players, after having agreed to let the likes of Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez and Francis Coquelin leave the club.
Attentions will now turn towards the summer transfer window and the possibility of the north London side bringing in some further reinforcements ahead of next season.
With Petr Cech now 35 and approaching the end of his career, the Gunners could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper.
Evening Standard reporter Olley says that the 25-year-old Oblak could be a target for the Gunners, but admits that any deal could hang on the Gunners’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Olley told the Evening Standard: “With David Ospina almost certain to depart and Petr Cech facing renewed criticism, Arsenal will scout various goalkeepers with Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak a potential candidate.
“The quality of player Arsenal can attract, however, will be influenced by whether they can offer Champions League football.
“A second year without that income stream would also reduce the money available to spend on players.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal are now preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next weekend.
The Gunners are looking to get their Premier League campaign back on track as they bid to try and finish in the top four this season after they ended up fifth last term.
