Paul Merson questions Arsenal over surprising January transfer deal
The Arsenal legend expresses his surprise at the Gunners' decision to sell Olivier Giroud to Chelsea FC
Paul Merson has admitted that he was surprised Arsenal sold Olivier Giroud to Chelsea FC in the January transfer window.
The Gunners sanctioned the sale of the France international to the defending Premier League champions on transfer deadline day.
Giroud completed a £21m move to Chelsea FC after the centre-forward struggled to tie down a starting spot at The Emirates in the 2017-18 season.
The 31-year-old has an impressive goals per minute ratio at Arsenal despite being used largely as a centre-forward over the past three seasons.
The French star made his first start for the Blues on Monday night in Chelsea FC’s much-needed 3-0 win over West Brom last week.
Giroud provided a deft assist to allow Belgium international Eden Hazard to break the deadlock in the first half.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson expressed his shock that the Gunners were willing to allow such a useful player leave the club in the January transfer window.
Asked whether he was surprised about Arsenal’s decision to offload Giroud, Merson told Sky Sports:
“Definitely. It was surprising Arsenal let Giroud go. He is an international quality player. He never let Arsenal down.”
Arsenal signed Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez complete a switch to Old Trafford.
The Gunners spent a club record fee on Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on transfer deadline day.
