Arsene Wenger’s side are facing a difficult task finishing in the Champions League spots this term given their inconsistent performances.
Arsenal lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at Wembley last weekend to lose further ground on their top-four rivals.
The Gunners are in sixth place in the Premier League table and six points behind Chelsea FC, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Arsenal have conceded 36 goals in 27 games in the Premier League this term to raise questions about their defensive players.
Wenger signed Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window.
The Gunners head coach didn’t sign a proven defender or holding midfielder last month despite their poor record on the road in the Premier League.
Former Arsenal star Merson believes the Gunners won’t improve their results until the north London side signed a defensive midfielder.
“Arsenal haven’t [addressed defensive midfield] – that’s why they’re sixth in the table,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports.
Arsenal will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley later this month.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 but have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons.
