Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hinted that the chance to follow in the footsteps of Thierry Henry played a part in his decision to move to Arsenal.

The Gabon international completed a reported £56m move to Arsenal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day.

Aubameyang put pen to paper on a long-term contract after the African forward became the most expensive signing in Arsenal’s history.

The 28-year-old earned himself a reputation as one of Europe’s most-prolific goal-scorers at Dortmund following a return of 141 goals in 213 games in all competitions.

The new Arsenal signing was born in France like Gunners legend Henry but his father is from Gabon and his mother is Spanish.

When asked during his first interview as a Gunners player about what attracted him to a move to Arsenal, Aubameyang told the club’s website:

“I think the club has such a big history and great players like Thierry Henry. He’s an example for us strikers. I’m really happy, like I said before.

“Because he was fast and scored a lot of goals. He’s really an example.”

When it was put to the Arsenal signing that he shares some of Henry’s characteristics, he replied: “Maybe! I think I have to work a lot to be like him, but I will do.”

Aubameyang finished as the Bundesliga’s top goal-scorer last season following a brilliant return of 30 goals in 31 games in the German top flight.

The Gabon striker will be available to feature in the Europa League for Arsenal in the knockout phase despite his participation in the Champions League with Dortmund this term.

Arsenal have also signed Aubameyang’s former Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal with Manchester United last week.
