Rio Ferdinand questions Arsene Wenger about failure to make vital Arsenal signing
The Man United legend is surprised Arsenal didn't sign a centre-half in the January transfer window
Rio Ferdinand has expressed his bemusement at Arsenal’s failure to sign a new centre-half.
The Gunners signed three players in the January transfer window and managed to offload three players during a busy month at The Emirates.
Arsenal started their transfer business with the addition of 20-year-old Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos in a £2m deal from PAS Giannina.
The north London side completed a swoop for Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez head to Manchester United.
Wenger broke the club’s transfer record when Arsenal signed Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a £56m deal from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day.
Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan were team-mates at Dortmund for three seasons before the Armenian playmaker moved to Manchester United in 2016.
Arsenal’s transfer business convinced Mesut Ozil to commit his future to the Gunners for another three and a half seasons to end speculation surrounding his future.
However, the Gunners have struggled defensively and their 3-1 loss at Swansea City saw Arsenal concede their 34th goal in 25 games in the Premier League this term.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand admitted that he is shocked Arsenal didn’t sign a new top-class centre-half to improve their defensive options.
“I still think they’re Achilles heel is defensively,” Ferdinand told BT Sport Premier League Tonight on Wednesday night. “I can’t believe he hasn’t gone and signed a centre-half.”
