Jamie Redknapp opens up about Mesut Ozil ahead of Arsenal v Man City
Jamie Redknapp explains why Sunday's League Cup final is crucial for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil
Jamie Redknapp has told Mesut Ozil that it is time for him to step up and perform in a big game for Arsenal against Manchester City in Sunday’s League Cup final.
The Germany playmaker missed the Europa League clash with Ostersunds on Thursday night due to injury, but he will be hoping to feature when the Gunners take on the Citizens for the first major piece of silverware on offer this season.
Ozil finally committed his long-term future to Arsenal this month when he signed a new long-term contract with the north London side to keep him at the club until the summer of 2021.
The 29-year-old is widely regarded as one of the finest attacking talents in the Premier League but he is often criticised for his failure to produce consistent form for the Gunners.
And former Liverpool FC defender Redknapp believes that it is time for Ozil to step up and prove he can influence a big game this weekend.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “It’s an important game for Mesut Ozil.
“There’s more responsibility on his shoulders now that Alexis Sanchez is gone, but don’t expect him to change the way he plays.
“He’s going to play at a pace that, unfortunately for him, does create criticism, because he looks so laid back.”
Arsenal are aiming to win the League Cup for the first time since Arsene Wenger’s appointment at the north London club back in 1996.
The Gunners have a good recent record at Wembley, having won the FA Cup and Community Shield there in recent visits.
