Gary Lineker takes credit for Lionel Messi’s goal in Chelsea FC v Barcelona
The former Barcelona striker takes credit for Lionel Messi's equaliser at Chelsea FC on Tuesday night
Gary Lineker jokingly took credit for Lionel Messi’s first goal against Chelsea FC in nine attempts after the Barcelona legend rescued a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Messi made the trip to west London in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash looking to find the net for the first time against the Blues after drawing blank on eight previous occasions.
Indeed, the Argentina international hit the woodwork from the penalty spot in 2012 as Chelsea FC managed to beat Barcelona in the semi-finals en route to an unlikely Champions League title.
Brazilian forward Willian hit the woodwork twice in the first half before the Chelsea FC midfielder broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a precise finish for the home side.
However, Andres Iniesta pounced on Andreas Christensen’s loose pass to tee up Messi to equalise 10 minutes later as the Argentina international ended his goal drought against Chelsea FC.
Former Barcelona striker Lineker and his four sons met Messi on Monday night ahead of the Champions League encounter.
The Match Of The Day host was quick to take to Twitter to jokingly take credit for Messi’s equaliser.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Messi scores for the first time ever against Chelsea. Suppose he’ll want me to come and see him before every game now. 🙄”
