Michael Owen raves about Willian’s performance in Chelsea FC v Barcelona
The Liverpool FC legend reacts to Willian's performance in Chelsea FC's 1-1 draw with Barcelona on Tuesday night
Michael Owen has admitted that he finds it puzzling that Willian struggles to get in the Chelsea FC team after the Brazilian’s opener in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues forward has found his first-team opportunities limited under Antonio Conte since the Italian coach took over the reins of the west London club ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.
However, Conte handed Willian his third start of the Champions League campaign for the visit of Barcelona in the first leg of their last-16 clash at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Willian hit the woodwork twice in the first half as the South American produced a sprightly performance to justify his inclusion in Conte’s starting XI.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk forward finally made the breakthrough in the 62nd minute with precise finish from outside the area.
Willian squandered an opportunity to double the home side’s lead when Gerard Pique’s tackle denied the South American a shot on goal.
Less than 60 seconds later, Barcelona were level after Lionel Messi capitalised on Andreas Christensen’s mistake.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen was impressed with Willian’s performance on Tuesday night.
Owen wrote on his Twitter page: “Always scratched my head as to why Willian isn’t a regular in this Chelsea team. Great set piece taker, quick, scores and creates. I rate him highly.”
Willian has scored four goals and has made two assists in 13 starts and 13 substitute appearances in the Premier League this term.
