Andy Townsend: Why Chelsea FC supporters shouldn’t worry about Alvaro Morata
The Chelsea FC legend is backing Alvaro Morata to ultimately prove a success at Stamford Bridge
Andy Townsend is confident that Alvaro Morata will prove a success at Chelsea FC despite a difficult spell for the club record signing.
The Spain international moved to the west London side in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window to bolster Antonio Conte’s attacking options.
However, Morata has suffered from a lack of confidence and a loss of form in recent months to raise serious questions about his ability to thrive in the Premier League.
The Chelsea FC striker has failed to score in his last six Premier League games, while Morata has struggled with fitness issues given England’s demanding fixture schedule.
The Blues forward was sent off in Chelsea FC’s penalty shootout win over Norwich City in the FA Cup and hasn’t featured for the west London side since the fourth round clash.
However, former Chelsea FC defender Townsend is confident that Morata will ultimately prove a success at Stamford Bridge despite a difficult spell for the Spain international.
“I like Morata. He has never been overly prolific wherever he has been,” Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He hasn’t started week in, week out at the other two big clubs that he has been at. He will end up with his best league tally so far which would be a success for him.
“I think he can go on to be a very useful player. He can be a centre forward who can lead the line with genuine justification.”
Chelsea FC started the weekend in fourth place in the Premier League table following successive losses to Bournemouth and Watford over the past fortnight or so.
The Blues will take on West Brom on Monday night in search of a second Premier League win in 2018.
