Steven Gerrard has hailed Chelsea FC defender Cesar Azpilicueta as a manager’s dream.

The Spanish defender has been one of Chelsea FC’s most consistent players in an otherwise difficult season for the defending champions.

Azpilicueta has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best defenders after impressing at centre-half, left-back and right-back.

The 28-year-old has also offered a contribution going forward with two goals and six assists in the Champions League and the Premier League this term.

The versatile defender was unable to help Chelsea FC protect a 1-0 lead in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Tuesday night.

Willian broke the deadlock in the second half but Andreas Christensen’s loose pass allowed Lionel Messi to level the first-leg tie with 18 minutes to go.

Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard explained why every manager would love to have Azpilicueta in their team.

“He’s a manager’s dream,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “He’s get in 99 per cent of any team in the world because any manager would want him.

“He’s always available, he’s robust. It seems like he’s so professional as well. He’s a fantastic player.”

Chelsea FC signed Azpilicueta from Ligue 1 side Marseille in the 2012 summer transfer window.

The versatile Spanish defender has won two Premier League titles, the Europa League and the League Cup since his move to Chelsea FC.

The Blues are in fourth place in the Premier League table and will make the trip to Manchester United on Sunday.
