Frank Lampard: Why Antonio Conte should be proud of his Chelsea FC players
The Chelsea FC legend believes Antonio Conte should be satisfied with his team's performance against Barcelona
Frank Lampard believes Chelsea FC boss Antonio Conte should take satisfaction from his team’s ability to limit Barcelona to a couple of chances at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The Blues welcomed the La Liga leaders to west London following a difficult start to 2018 for the Premier League title holders.
Chelsea FC ended a two-game losing run in the English top flight with a 3-0 victory over 20th-placed West Brom before a 4-0 win over Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round last week.
Conte’s defence has struggled to maintain their high standards in the current campaign after conceding 23 goals in 27 games including a 4-1 loss at Watford and 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth.
However, the Chelsea rearguard manager to keep Barcelona at bay for 72 minutes before Andreas Christensen’s mistake allowed Andres Iniesta to tee up Lionel Messi to score the equaliser.
Former Chelsea FC midfielder Lampard felt Conte could still feel pride at his players’ performance against the runaway La Liga leaders.
“Conte should be proud of his players because they took the plan and executed it brilliantly throughout the game,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“To restrict a team like Barcelona to one or two chances and one being the mistake that led to the goal… It’s great team-work from all of them.”
Chelsea FC are looking to win the Champions League for the second time in their history after their penalty shootout triumph over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena under caretaker manager Roberto di Matteo back in 2012.
