Phil Thompson claims Antonio Conte has undermined Chelsea FC title success
The Liverpool FC legend believes Antonio Conte has undermined Chelsea FC's title success
Phil Thompson believes Antonio Conte has undermined his title success at Chelsea FC following his fallout with the Blues board this term.
The Italian coach took over the reins of the west London club in 2016 after he was named as Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor at Stamford Bridge.
Conte led Chelsea FC to the Premier League title in his first season at Stamford Bridge after the Blues finished seven points clear of their closest challenges Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues were hoping to defend their top-flight crown this term but Conte’s side struggled to maintain their consistency throughout his second season at Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea FC manager has spoken of his unhappiness with the defending champions’ transfer policy after failing to significantly strengthen their squad with quality additions.
The title holders started the weekend in fourth place and 19 points behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson claimed that Conte’s constant bickering with his Chelsea FC employers has tarnished last season’s title success.
“Big question marks remain over whether he will stay at Chelsea and this season has somewhat undermined the success of winning the league,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“He’s got a good team but he’s not sorted out his back up in different positions.”
Chelsea FC lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium back in January.
The Blues signed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud and AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri in the January transfer window.
