New Chelsea FC signing sends message to Blues supporters about debut
Olivier Giroud was delighted to make his first Chelsea FC start in Monday night's 3-0 win against West Brom
Olivier Giroud has expressed his delight at making his Chelsea FC debut in Monday night’s 3-0 win against West Brom.
The France international moved to the defending Premier League champions from their bitter London rivals Arsenal in a £21m deal in the January transfer window.
Giroud was limited to substitute appearances in the English top flight under Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger before his move to Chelsea FC.
The 31-year-old centre-forward came off the bench in Chelsea FC’s losses to Bournemouth and Watford.
However, Antonio Conte handed Giroud his first start and the January signing provided a deft assist for Eden Hazard’s opener in a 3-0 victory over West Brom.
The Frenchman was forced off due to an injury problem at the hour mark as Giroud was replaced by Spain international Alvaro Morata.
However, the Blues striker was thrilled with his debut and moved to reassure Chelsea FC supporters that he will recover quickly from his injury.
“It was very exciting for me,” Giroud told Chelsea FC’s website.
“I was looking forward to making my debut at Stamford Bridge so I feel very good. Obviously I had the studs on my head, and afterwards I needed some stitches at half-time, but I feel okay.
“The main thing was the calf, when I received a kick from behind. It was sore so hopefully I’m going to recover quickly. It’s part of the game and as long as it’s not on purpose it’s okay, I’m used to it and the doctor has done a good job.
“I’m very happy for the team, obviously we needed those three points and we needed confidence for the following games. We done the job, it was a clean sheet, three goals and we could have scored more. It’s true that the team wasn’t playing with full freedom at times but that’s normal after two disappointing results.
“I feel very good. It’s been maybe two months since I started a game. I’m training hard and working to be ready physically and I tried to do what the coach asked me to do tactically.”
Chelsea FC are in fourth place in the Premier League table following their 3-0 win over West Brom.
The Blues will take on Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
The west London side will take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday 25 February.
