Pat Nevin names five Chelsea FC stars who Antonio Conte needs fit
The Chelsea FC legend believes part of the Blues' struggles is down to fitness issues affecting some of their key players
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea FC are paying the price for the demands of a packed schedule with key players missing significant game time.
The Blues slumped to a second successive Premier League defeat on Monday night following a 4-1 loss to London rivals Watford at Vicarage Road.
Chelsea FC were soundly beaten 3-0 by Premier League strugglers Bournemouth in their last top-flight outing at Stamford Bridge at the end of January.
The west London side have dropped down to fourth place in the Premier League table following a return of one win in their last five top-flight games.
To compound their misery, Chelsea FC crashed out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage following a 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the second leg at The Emirates.
Antonio Conte has been contending with a fresh wave of speculation surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge in recent weeks.
However, former Chelsea FC winger Nevin believes the Italian coach is paying the price for missing some of seasoned pros and some exciting talents due to the demands of competing in four competitions.
“Right now, if Chelsea had a fully fit Alvaro Morata and Andreas Christensen and hadn’t had to do without the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Willian and David Luiz for a few weeks things almost certainly would not have been so rocky,” Nevin told Chelsea FC’s website.
“Others teams have injuries too, and sometimes it is just your turn. Remember when Arsenal went through a horrendous period of soft tissue injuries and everyone wanted to find a simple reason. Sometimes it is just back luck and you have to deal with it.”
With any luck, these few days rest and an entire week between games will be just what the players needed. Then again, after this busy month, maybe you and I need a bit of a rest from it too.
Chelsea FC will take on 20th-placed West Brom in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
