Pat Nevin: Why I felt sorry for Chelsea FC star in 4-1 loss at Watford

Pat Nevin has hinted that Tiemoue Bakayoko should have been taken off before the Chelsea FC midfielder was allowed to compound a poor start with a red card in Monday night’s 4-1 loss at Watford.

The defending Premier League champions signed the France international in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the summer transfer window ahead of Nemanja Matic’s departure to Manchester United.

Bakayoko, though, has struggled to hit the ground running in the Premier League and the defensive midfielder has produced a number of inconsistent performances in his fledgling Blues career so far.

The 24-year-old gave away the ball four times in the opening 30 minutes at Vicarage Road before he clumsily picked up two yellow cards in quick succession to receive his marching orders.

Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin admitted that he felt a little sorry for Bakayoko following his inevitable red card on a humiliating night for the defending champions at their London rivals.

“I felt really sorry for him at one point,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.

“After his booking, I said you had to take him off the park. It was going so horribly for him. The only time the ball was landing at him was by mistake. The Chelsea players weren’t passing to him. He was completely devoid of confidence.

“You just thought if you’re having that bad a day, you could get sent off.”

Chelsea FC have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte.

The Blues lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final at The Emirates last week.
