Graeme Souness believes that the race for fourth place in the Premier League this season is now a straight shootout between Manchester United and Chelsea FC.

The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table but they have been in stuttering form in recent weeks.

Indeed, the Red Devils have lost two of their last three Premier League games to leave them in second place but just two points ahead of third-placed Liverpool FC as the race for the Champions League spots hots up.

Former Liverpool FC star Souness feels that both Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur will finish in the top four, leaving Chelsea FC and Manchester United scrapping for the final Champions League spot.

Writing in his column for the Sunday Times, Souness said: “Fourth place is now between them [Chelsea] and United.

“Jose Mourinho’s side must be looking over their shoulders, given the way they are playing compared to Liverpool and Tottenham.

“I reckon Tottenham and Liverpool will get there and United will need to hold off Chelsea to finish fourth.”

Manchester United are currently preparing for the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Sevilla in Spain on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Chelsea FC are gearing up for their crunch showdown with FC Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues won the Premier League title in style last season, and Manchester United ended up in sixth place in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
