Antonio Conte sends message to Alvaro Morata about new Chelsea FC signing
Antonio Conte tells Alvaro Morata that competition is healthy for his Chelsea FC squad after the Blues signed Olivier Giroud
Antonio Conte has told Alvaro Morata that competition is healthy in his Chelsea FC squad after the Blues brought in Olivier Giroud from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
Giroud has been getting used to life at Stamford Bridge since his surprise move from Arsenal in January and he set up Eden Hazard for the Blues’ first goal in the 3-0 win over West Brom last week.
The 31-year-old striker will be hoping to hold down a regular place in the Chelsea FC team between now and the end of the season as he looks to earn a call-up to the France squad for the World Cup in the summer.
The arrival of Giroud has brought fresh competition for Morata at Chelsea FC as the pair both try and help the Blues enjoy a successful second half of the season.
But Conte has reminded the Spanish forward that competition for places amongst his squad is a good thing.
Speaking at a news conference before the FA Cup clash with Hull City on Friday, Conte said: “Alvaro is a player with a good responsibility and good maturity. Competition is good for the team.
“A great team must have competition in every position. For us, Giroud is a good option. He’s very strong, he’s a powerful player and he can help us for the rest of the season.
“At this moment it’s very important to have all your players available. To have two number nines, Morata and Giroud, two options, is very important for us. Remember for a lot of the time we tried to play with Eden Hazard as a number nine.”
Morata has made a decent start to life at Stamford Bridge since his move to the west London club from Real Madrid last July.
The 25-year-old has scored 10 goals and made five assists in the top flight for Conte’s men so far this term.
