Antonio Conte: Chelsea FC star was ‘incredible’ against FC Barcelona
Antonio Conte refuses to criticise Andreas Christensen after Chelsea FC's 1-1 draw with FC Barcelona
Antonio Conte leapt to the defence of Andreas Christensen despite the defender’s error leading to FC Barcelona’s equaliser in Chelsea FC’s 1-1 draw in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Danish defender, who has been in top form this season, played a loose ball across the box, only for it to be intercepted by Andres Iniesta, who set up Lionel Messi for the equaliser.
The goal came after Willian had fired the Blues into the lead in the 62nd minute with a low shot into the bottom corner.
The result leaves Chelsea FC needing to score at the Camp Nou in the return leg on 14 March if they want to progress through to the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
Conte has shown faith in Christensen all season and the 21-year-old Danish defender has been earning plenty of praise for his performances.
And the Chelsea FC boss refused to criticise the defender following his costly mistake in the second half at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Wednesday night, Conte said: “I think Christensen had a great performance, incredible. He’s only 21 years old.
“It’s great he’s able to play the game with this maturity and personality. I’m very happy.
“Christensen, for me, was one of the best players tonight. I repeat, he played a top game and I’m really pleased with his performance.”
Chelsea FC will now switch their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues are currently fourth in the Premier League table.
