Antonio Conte sends clear warning to new Chelsea FC signing
Antonio Conte tells Chelsea FC signing Ross Barkley that he will have to prove himself as worthy of a spot in England's World Cup squad
Antonio Conte has told Ross Barkley that he will have to prove himself as worthy of a spot in England’s World Cup squad by delivering consistently for Chelsea FC this season.
The England midfielder has been getting used to life at Stamford Bridge after having signed for the Blues from Everton at the start of the January transfer window.
Barkley made his debut for the Blues when they took on Arsenal in the League Cup semi-finals earlier this month and he will be hoping to hold down a more regular role in the first team at Stamford Bridge in the coming weeks and months.
It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will be able to force his way into contention for the World Cup this summer after he missed the first half of the season due to a serious hamstring injury.
However, Conte believes that Barkley clearly has what it takes to make the squad as long as he applies himself in the coming months.
Asked if Barkley could make the England squad for the World Cup, Conte is quoted as saying by Metro: “There is time.
“But, at the same time, in every game when you decide to play for a great team, in every game you are in contention with other players.
“You have to try and exploit every chance you have to play and show you deserve to play. The time is right to find a place in the World Cup (squad), but for sure it won’t be easy because, in the England squad, they are very strong.
“There are strong players in the national team.”
Barkley will be hoping to feature for Chelsea FC when they travel to Watford in the Premier League on Monday night next week.
