Antonio Conte: Chelsea FC must make these signings in the summer
Antonio Conte explains why Chelsea FC need to make a small number of world-class signings this summer
Antonio Conte has admitted that Chelsea FC need to make two or three world-class signings in the summer transfer window if they are to compete for the Premier League title next term.
The Blues were busy in the January transfer window as they completed deals for Ross Barkley, Emerson Palmieri and Olivier Giroud.
However, the west London side still find themselves to be significantly off the pace in the race for the Premier League title this season as they bid to try and at least finish in the top four this term.
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title in style in Conte’s first campaign in charge at the club last term but they have struggled to find consistent form in the top flight this term around.
And Conte admits that the Blues will have to focus on bringing in some players of true quality in the summer transfer window as they look to rebuild their squad.
Speaking at a news conference at Cobham on Friday afternoon, Conte said: “In the future, if there is the possibility, you have to try to buy only two or three players – not eight players.
“Don’t forget, this summer, we brought in eight players and spent a lot less than other teams who bought only two or three.
“We have to create a basis; we have to build something important. To do this, you must have 15 or 16 players. In the summer, we changed eight players.
“That means you don’t have a basis, a great foundation. We must have great patience to understand the moment.
“We lost strong, experienced players in the last few years, so we must have patience to understand that, now, we have to appreciate the moment, be realistic, create a basis and then build something important to face big challenges with the other teams.”
Chelsea FC are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday night.
The Blues head into that game looking to try and get back to winning ways after the disappointment of their shock 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge last week.
