Chris Sutton delivers verdict on new Chelsea FC signing Emerson
Chris Sutton discusses Chelsea FC's signing of Emerson Palmieri from Roma in the January transfer window
Chris Sutton has admitted that he is not sure whether Emerson Palmieri was one of Antonio Conte’s transfer targets but is backing the Brazilian to strengthen the Chelsea FC squad.
The Brazilian defender signed for the west London club from Roma in the January transfer window as the Blues moved to bring in reinforcements at left-back.
Emerson will be hoping to challenge Marcos Alonso for a regular place in the first team at Stamford Bridge this season as he bids to earn a spot in the starting line-up.
Former Chelsea FC striker Sutton believes that Emerson is a good signing for the west London side, although he admits that he is not sure whether he was Conte’s choice or not.
Speaking to BT Sport on Friday night, Sutton said: “Who signed him? Who knows?
“He’s got a good pedigree, he gets up and down the wing. It’s competition for places.
“Marcos Alonso has been excellent all season but when he’s out, they have another quality left-back now.”
Chelsea FC are currently preparing for their crunch Champions League showdown with FC Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The Blues are getting ready to host the Spanish giants as they bid to try and reach the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
Chelsea FC are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification this season under Conte after having won the title last term.
