Antonio Conte: Why Chelsea FC have signed 23-year-old Brazilian
Antonio Conte explains why Chelsea FC were so keen to sign Emerson Palmieri from Roma last month
Antonio Conte has admitted his delight at seeing Chelsea FC complete a deal to sign Emerson Palmieri from Roma in the January transfer window.
The 23-year-old was confirmed as the Blues’ second signing of the winter last week after weeks of speculation linking him with a move to the west London club.
Emerson has already linked up with his new team-mates and has started training at Cobham as he bids to try and earn a spot in the first team under Conte.
The Brazilian will be competing with Marcos Alonso for a spot on the left side of defence and he will be hoping to prove his worth to Conte sooner rather than later.
And the Chelsea FC boss has now lifted the lid on the reasons why the Blues were so keen to sign the defender from the Italian club in the mid-season transfer window.
Speaking at a news conference at Cobham on Friday afternoon, Conte said: “With Emerson Palmieri we are talking about a young player, without a great international experience but a good young player.
“He only played last season with Roma but did very well before having a bad injury.
“Now he is with us and for sure he is an option for Marcos Alonso’s position. He is a good young player.”
It remains to be seen whether Emerson could play a part for Chelsea FC when the Blues return to Premier League action on Monday night with a crunch clash against Watford at Vicarage Road.
The Blues are looking to bounce back after their shock loss to Bournemouth last week.
