Rio Ferdinand reacts to Andrea’s Christensen’s display in Chelsea FC’s 1-1 draw with FC Barcelona
Rio Ferdinand admits that Andreas Christensen paid for a lapse in concentration in Chelsea FC v FC Barcelona
Rio Ferdinand admitted that Andreas Christensen was made to pay for a sloppy lapse in concentration as FC Barcelona came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Chelsea FC in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash on Tuesday night.
After a goalless first half at Stamford Bridge, Willian gave the Blues the lead in the 62nd minute when he fired home after having hit both posts in the first half.
However, their lead did not last for long, as Christensen played Cesar Azpilicueta into trouble and Andres Iniesta capitalised to set up Lionel Messi for the equaliser in the 75th minute.
The result leaves the tie finely poised ahead of Chelsea FC’s return to FC Barcelona for the return leg on 14 March.
And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was disappointed to see Christensen’s error undo all of Chelsea FC’s hard work which had come before.
Speaking to BT Sport after the final whistle, Ferdinand said: “Antonio Conte’s face says it all – the disappointment. Tactically he got it spot on and set his team up perfectly and compact.
“It was an individual mistake tonight.
“Young Andreas Christensen played very well and made that pass across the box – you don’t do that as a defender with players of the magnitude on the pitch.”
Chelsea FC now switch their attentions back towards the Premier League and their trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification this season.
