Chelsea FC legend makes claim about Tiemoue Bakayoko and Nemanja Matic transfers
Ray Wilkins criticises Chelsea FC for failing to replace Nemanja Matic in the summer transfer window
Ray Wilkins has claimed that Chelsea FC have made a huge mistake by swapping Nemanja Matic for Tiemoue Bakayoko in the summer transfer window – but says that the decision was not Antonio Conte’s.
The Blues raised eyebrows when they allowed midfielder Matic to leave Stamford Bridge and sign for their Premier League rivals Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
The move came after the Blues recruited Bakayoko from Monaco in a big-money deal but it was not clear whether it was sanctioned by Conte.
Matic has been one of Manchester United’s most consistent performers this season and he has been a regular fixture in the first team at Old Trafford.
Bakayoko, however, has seemingly struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, and his struggles at Chelsea FC were compounded when he was sent off in the first half of the Blues’ 4-1 loss to Watford on Monday night.
And former Chelsea FC star Wilkins admits that he cannot believe that the Blues allowed Matic to leave Stamford Bridge without finding a suitable replacement.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Wilkins said: “I believe it was Michael [Emenalo] who made the changes.
“To actually swap Matic with Bakayoko? They should have brought in Morata to play alongside Costa and they should have signed Bakayoko just to play every now and again.
“He is 23 years of age and he came in from the French league, which is a bit of a doddle.”
Chelsea FC return to Premier League action on Monday night when they host West Bromwich Albion in front of their home fans at Stamford Bridge.
