Chris Sutton believes Chelsea FC didn’t sign enough players of quality to win the Champions League and retain the Premier League.

The Blues won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season after Chelsea FC finished seven points clear of Tottenham.

Antonio Conte relied on a core of players to get the west London side over the line in the title race last season.

The Italian coach missed out on some top targets last summer, such as Romelu Lukaku and Alex Sandro to infuriate the Chelsea FC boss.

The Blues still recruited six new players before Chelsea FC made three January signings to add more depth to the Italian’s squad.

However, Conte still didn’t appear happy with the additions to the Chelsea FC team.

The west London side have lost their last two Premier League games to drop down to fourth place in the table and heap pressure on Conte.

However, former Blues striker Sutton believes Chelsea FC haven’t supported Conte enough in the transfer market.

“He can always go back to the recruitment issue. In fairness to Conte, he wins the league,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I never thought they were strong enough to compete on the European front and retain their title. It’s as simple as that.”

Chelsea FC will take on La Liga leaders Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 later this month.

The Blues lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final at The Emirates back in January.
