New Chelsea FC signing Emerson Palmieri admits he is excited about the prospect of teaming up with his former AS Roma team-mate Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian full-back completed a £17.5m move to the defending Premier League champions from the Serie A giants on the penultimate day of the transfer window on Tuesday night.

Palmieri will be tasked with providing some competition for in-form Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso following his January move to Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old, who has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal at Cobham training ground, has only made one appearance for Roma this season following an injury problem.

Chelsea FC’s new number 33 spent three seasons at the Stadio Olimpico and played alongside Germany international Rudiger for two seasons in the Italian capital.

Rudiger completed a £34m move to the west London club in the summer to help replace Chelsea FC legend John Terry.

The new Chelsea signing is excited to link up with Rudiger at the Premier League title holders following his January transfer.

“Toni and I played for a couple of years together at Roma and they were great years,” Palmieri told Chelsea’s website.

“All I can say about him is that he is an extraordinary guy and a great player, and he has already shown that here at Chelsea, so I could not be happier to be back alongside him.

“I had already spoken with him twice last week and today as well. When I arrived here in London, he was the first person I sent a message to say that I was in the house.”

Palmieri can take heart from Alonso’s meteoric rise at Chelsea following his £17m move from Fiorentina just over 18 months ago.

The Spanish defender has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top left-backs following a return of 12 goals in 55 top-flight games.
