Antonio Conte told Alvaro Morata still key despite new Chelsea FC signing
Kenny Cunningham believes Alvaro Morata will remain Chelsea FC's first-choice striker despite the arrival of Olivier Giroud
Alvaro Morata is still the key man for Chelsea despite the arrival of Olivier Giroud, Kenny Cunningham says.
The defending Premier League champions made a big effort to sign a striker to provide competition for Morata in the January transfer window.
The Spanish forward scored 10 times in the Premier League so far but Morata has failed to find the net in his last six appearances in all competitions.
Chelsea were initially linked with a surprise swoop to sign injury-prone West Ham striker Andy Carroll, before AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko emerged as their top target.
The title holders finally signed a target man on transfer deadline day following the £21m addition of Olivier Giroud from their bitter rivals Arsenal.
The France international is a proven goal-scorer in the Premier League following five successful seasons at the Emirates Stadium.
Former Republic of Ireland international Cunningham believes Morata will still be the key man up front for Chelsea despite Giroud’s addition.
“Morata is the way forward for Chelsea. You have to stick with him,” Cunningham told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“When he finds a little bit of form and confidence, he is the ideal forward for Hazard. The key is getting Morata back on form.”
Chelsea signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton at the start of the January transfer window.
The title holders recruited AS Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri to bolster their defensive options for the remainder of the season.
